The stories in this Second Reader of the Moore-McGuffey Eclectic Reader series have been drawn from the original McGuffey Readers, the books that taught generations of students to read and think. The stories within this edition emphasize the same values stressed in the first edition -- piety, obedience, concern for others, diligence and moral behavior.
The main character of each story is always someone with whom the young student can identify; each story contains activity readily understood by young minds. Perhaps quaint by today's standards, the McGuffey Reader stories comprising this Second Reader are true to their original counterparts, including phrasing and expressions, environments, relationships and knowledge.
In stories where modern technology has revealed new information or contradicting evidence, questions at the end of the chapter guide the student to discover the most recent findings. New questions have been written for today's student to further reading comprehension and reasoning power, and to reinforce the lesson taught. The accompanying word lists contain selected words from the accompanying word lists contain selected words from the stories and may be used for reading, spelling or vocabulary work.
The level of difficulty increases with each story. By the time a child finishes the Second Reader, he or she is capable of beginning the Third Reader in the four-book series.
The Readers are not correlated with grade or age levels, however. When William Holmes McGuffey first wrote the series in 1836, a student attended school and progressed at his or her own pace. In those days, any student who had complete all four McGuffey's Readers was considered well educated.
All new art has been produced for the Second Reader in this edition of McGuffey's Readers. Artist Greg Constantine's illustrations are consistent with the style and coloring prevalent in McGuffey's era. His art adds to the sense of heritage the student will perceive as he or she completes the Second Reader of Moore-McGuffey's Eclectic Readers.
