Support System for Home Schoolers
When you began teaching your children at home, it was the end result of many decisions you made along the way. Once you jumped over the various hurdles to then begin home schooling, one thing you may have overlooked was the isolation you might experience because of your decision to home school your children. As a result, you may be feeling a bit overwhelmed, simply because you feel alone.
The fact is, there are many other home school parents who feel the same way. This may or may not surprise you but, there are other home school parents in your area who have also felt isolated and alone but, they no longer feel that way because they have discovered what you need to know: there is a network of home schoolers who have banded together to form a support group, and that is available for you!
Parents and their home schooled children of today are finding an extensive network of community resources online. There are numerous web sites that can provide links to help you reach others in your area that are also home schooling. You will find forums addressing various needs and concerns, such as links to find out your state requirements to home school, or the need to find reputable curriculum web sites; or just someone in your area to talk to for moral support.
The fact is, there are most likely more people in your area that are home schooling than you are aware of and they may feel the same way. By searching the web, you will be amazed at the number of support groups available for home schooling parents like yourself. As you start this part of your home school journey, you will begin to plug into support groups that will be there when you are in need. And, it will be just as likely that you will begin to be there for others as well.
By connecting with other home school parents, you can both share insights and various experiences that will help as you continually adjust your methods of home schooling your children. You can avoid many mistakes and pitfalls by drawing from the experience others have to offer and, in time, you will also be able to then help others. You truly are not alone!
In addition to the Internet when looking for other home school families, consider checking community ads in your local paper or visiting your library to see what is being checked out with home schooling in mind. Maybe your local churches will have some names of home schoolers in your area that you can contact for support. As you make contact with that first home school family, you will find your list of home school families begin to grow. Before you know it, you will be part of a home school support group and, as a result, be greatly encouraged in your choice to home school.
By being part of a home school support group, you are now part of a ‘give and take’ family. You will either receive or give support addressing anything from what type curriculum to choose to just providing a shoulder to cry on. You will also benefit greatly from ‘seasoned’ home schoolers who have ‘been there, done that’ and will keep you from making mistakes; or even having thoughts of giving up. In other words, you will be plugged into a support group of men and women dedicated to educating their children at home that will help you keep your sanity!
There are many home school families that are willing to share their experiences with you. There are also many home school families that need what you have to offer. By joining a support system for home schoolers, you will never have to ‘go it alone’. By pooling your home schooling resources, you can become part of a powerful network of support within your town, community or neighborhood that will enable you to stay the course by deciding to home school your children.
