Five Easy Steps to Homeschool Your Children
When parents decide to keep their children at home and home school them, it can be for a variety of reasons. Anything from taking their children out of public schools due to religious convictions to believing they can do a better job of educating their children, many parents today are opting to home school. Of the many reasons given, it is no secret that, when parents are willing to put forth the effort to ensure their children get the best education possible, they are also guaranteeing their children will grow up having much more one on one interaction with them.
Those in the United States are fortunate they can even consider the possibility of teaching their children at home. In many other countries this is not possible. In fact, there are reports of parents being arrested and their children taken away from them for daring to home school. Thanks to the hard work of many brave parents, such as Raymond and Dorothy Moore, homeschooling is legal in this country today. That being said, let’s take a look at five easy steps to home school your children.
1) Check with other home schooling families in your area. You can get online today and find other families that are home schooling in your community. You can also check with the library or local newspaper for those who are teaching their children at home. You will be able to ask how you can go about home schooling your children; as well as what the requirements are for your particular state, or what types of curriculum are available.
2) Before deciding which curriculum to choose, sit down and talk with your children and determine where their interests lie. Based on that, plus what subjects your particular state requires, you will be better informed as to what curriculum you will need that will best fit your child’s needs, as well as be in compliance with your state.
3) There are two general types of curriculum: workbooks and study guides, and electronic software. Depending what your child is inclined to gravitate toward, after consulting with both other home schooled families and your children, you will have a better idea of which type to choose. Many curriculums make both available to cover all the bases. The fact is, some students prefer a more hands-on approach, while others are more inclined toward electronic education. Either way, there are many reputable curriculum providers that can meet your needs.
4) Keep in mind that you are now home schooling your children and, as such, you don’t have to hold to a ‘traditional’ schedule. Flexibility is one of the benefits to home schooling, enabling you to adjust your day to day operation based on the needs of your children. In fact, you don’t even have to establish a school room based on what the public school design is. However, you do need to assign an area that will be for the class room teaching; but there need not be a focus on each class lasting a set amount of time or the day being eight hours long each day.
5) It is imperative that you relax and enjoy the time with your children, with the assurance that they will learn something every day! You have purposed to remove your children from the public school environment and that means breaking ‘tradition’ in many areas; but still focusing on the one thing needful: your child’s education. You will find in time that, when the school bell ringing designating the class is over and it’s time to move on has been removed, the pressure will be removed from your children and they will be better able to learn their subjects in a relaxed atmosphere.
By applying these five easy steps to home school your children, you will guarantee your children will be given the best chance to fully learn and never stop desiring to learn throughout their lives. They will grow up healthy, happy and well-adjusted, ready to enter into the adult world as productive members of society.
