The Moores never sought to become pioneers in the home schooling movement.  In fact, they were professionals known around the world; he for reorganizing colleges and universities and for establishing highly-successful work-study programs; she as a world class curriculum and reading authority; and both as child specialists.  They simply desired to share that child development stages are a major critical element so children could fully comprehend what they were being taught, but only when they were developmentally ready.  The further they dug into this concept, the more apparent it became that the way a child was being educated had a negative effect on their development instead of a positive one.

Through many years of exhaustive study in child development research, and the publishing of a wide range of reports addressing topics such as child cognitive development, the Moores began to experience resistance within the main stream educational system when it came to their findings.  This ultimately led them to advocate home schooling as the better alternative, always for the sake of the child.
